There are things that are part of our daily lives that we hardly notice until they stop working. Waste collection is one of them. Every day, tonnes of waste are generated that need to be collected, transported, sorted and treated properly to prevent them from affecting the environment.

Behind this entire process lies an issue that goes far beyond waste management itself: protecting our environment and, with it, our health.

Proper waste management helps prevent soil and water pollution, reduce impacts on air quality and recover materials that can still have a second life. It also ensures that waste requiring specific treatment due to its characteristics is managed safely.

That is why, at TMA, we understand integrated waste management as an activity that has a direct impact on the areas where we operate and on the people who live there.

FROM WASTE TO RESOURCE

For a long time, talking about waste mainly meant talking about something that had to be disposed of. Today, we know that the approach needs to be different.

Many of the materials we discard can still be recovered, reused or transformed into new resources. Waste management therefore plays a key role in moving towards a more circular economy, in which materials remain in use for as long as possible.

This is one of the areas we work on at TMA: adding value to waste whenever possible and minimising the amount that ends up with no possibility of recovery.

Recovery, recycling and the reuse of materials help reduce the need for new raw materials and avoid the impacts associated with their extraction and processing.

Our goal of moving towards a Zero Waste model is based precisely on this approach: preventing waste generation, making the most of the resources it contains and ensuring the safe management of waste that cannot be recovered.

RESPONSIBLE MANAGEMENT STARTS WITH THE FIRST STEP

Whether waste reaches the right treatment process depends on everything that happens beforehand.

Collection and transport are an essential part of the process. Efficient planning makes it possible to optimise routes, avoid unnecessary journeys and make better use of available resources.

At TMA, we work continuously to improve our operations and have a fleet of more than 250 vehicles, progressively incorporating more efficient solutions, including electric and LPG hybrid vehicles.

But efficiency does not depend solely on vehicles.

Route planning, the use of technology, information management and the ability to respond appropriately to the needs of each service are also factors that help us reduce consumption and emissions without compromising service quality.

These improvements may not always be visible, but they make a difference when multiplied across thousands of services and journeys throughout the year.

SAFETY, CONTROL AND TRACEABILITY

Not all waste is the same and, therefore, neither can its management be.

Each type of waste requires specific conditions, and correctly following every stage of the process is essential to ensure both safety and environmental protection.

That is why traceability is an essential part of our work. Knowing what type of waste is collected, how it is transported and where it ends up allows us to maintain control over the entire process and ensure that it receives the appropriate treatment.

This way of working is particularly important when dealing with waste that could pose risks to people or the environment if not managed correctly.

Responsibility does not end when the waste leaves the customer’s facilities. It follows the waste throughout its entire journey.

MEASURING TO KNOW WHERE WE CAN IMPROVE

Sustainability also means constantly asking ourselves questions: Can we reduce a journey? Can we make better use of a material? Can we consume less energy? Can we make a process more efficient?

To answer these questions, we need data.

Measuring our environmental impact allows us to better understand our activities and identify areas where there is room for improvement. It is a way of turning good intentions into concrete decisions.

In this regard, calculating our carbon footprint and monitoring environmental indicators are part of an approach to sustainability based on knowledge and the continuous development of our own processes.

Because improving requires, first of all, knowing where we stand.

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH IS BUILT BY EVERYONE

Proper waste management also depends on how we generate waste and what we do with it.

Reducing unnecessary consumption, reusing items whenever possible, sorting waste correctly and disposing of it in the appropriate places are simple decisions that make everything that happens afterwards easier.

For companies, there is an additional responsibility: integrating environmental management into their daily activities and looking for solutions that reduce the impacts associated with their operations.

Environmental health does not depend on a single action or a single stakeholder. It is the result of many decisions which, taken together, ultimately have an impact on our environment.

CONTINUING TO MOVE FORWARD

At TMA, we have been working for years to make waste management increasingly efficient and responsible. We do not see sustainability as a project separate from our activity, but as part of the way we carry out our work.

Material recovery, process efficiency, transport optimisation, impact reduction, safety and traceability all form part of the same objective: to manage waste better in order to minimise its impact on our environment.

On 26 September, on the occasion of World Environmental Health Day, we want to highlight precisely this relationship that often goes unnoticed.

Because behind every piece of waste that is properly managed, there is much more than a collection and treatment process.

There are resources that can be recovered, impacts that can be avoided and environments that we can help preserve.

And this is also our way of taking care of environmental health.
