TMA has taken a decisive step in its circular economy strategy with the first outbound shipment of RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) produced at its Hoya-Gonzalo facility in Albacete.
This milestone confirms the full operational capacity of TMA’s plant and its ability to supply high‑quality alternative fuels to the industrial sector.
The material has been delivered to a cement plant, where it will be used as fuel in energy recovery processes, contributing to the progressive substitution of traditional fossil fuels.
FIRST RDF TRUCK LEAVES HOYA-GONZALO

The departure of the first truck loaded with RDF marks a significant moment for both the Hoya-Gonzalo plant and TMA.
This initial shipment demonstrates the facility’s ability to produce a stable, high‑quality alternative fuel and confirms that the RDF generated meets the technical requirements demanded by energy‑intensive industrial processes.
It also marks the beginning of a regular supply flow to the cement industry, consolidating TMA’s Albacete plant as a key hub for waste‑to‑energy recovery in the region.
WHAT RDF IS AND HOW IT IS PRODUCED: GIVING WASTE A SECOND LIFE

RDF (Recovered Solid Fuel) is produced from waste streams that can no longer be recycled.
At the Hoya-Gonzalo plant, these materials are selected, shredded, and conditioned until they become an alternative fuel with high calorific value.
In this way, waste that previously had no viable outlet is transformed into a valuable resource for industry.
HOW RDF IS USED: FROM WASTE TO ENERGY RESOURCE
Producing RDF is only the first step.
From there, the material follows a controlled process to ensure safe and efficient use:

-
- Safe and controlled transport. RDF is loaded onto trucks following strict protocols that ensure stability and full traceability. This first shipment demonstrates the plant’s operational readiness.
- Inspection at the receiving facility. Upon arrival at the industrial plant, RDF undergoes checks for moisture, calorific value, and particle size to ensure optimal performance as an alternative fuel.
- Use in high‑temperature processes. RDF is fed into kilns or boilers operating at very high temperatures. It is combusted in a controlled manner to generate energy for industrial processes such as cement manufacturing.
- Complete utilization. RDF is fully consumed during combustion, leaving no additional residues. This makes it an efficient and environmentally responsible alternative.
ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS OF RDF
Using RDF as an alternative fuel delivers significant environmental advantages aligned with European decarbonization and circular economy goals:

-
- CO₂ emission reduction. By replacing fossil fuels, RDF lowers the carbon footprint of industrial processes. Each tonne used avoids emissions associated with extracting and burning traditional fuels.
- Less waste sent to landfill. RDF is produced from non‑recyclable fractions. Its energy recovery prevents these materials from ending up in controlled landfills, reducing environmental pressure and methane emissions.
- Optimized waste life cycle. The process recovers the energy value of materials that can no longer be recycled, closing the loop and maximizing resource efficiency.
- Support for the energy transition. Sectors such as cement manufacturing advance toward more sustainable models thanks to alternative fuels like RDF, reducing dependence on fossil resources.
THE HOYA-GONZALO PLANT: A COMPREHENSIVE ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLEX FOR WASTE RECOVERY IN CASTILLA-LA MANCHA
TMA’s Hoya-Gonzalo facility (Albacete) is one of the most advanced environmental complexes in Castilla-La Mancha.
Covering 301,500 m², it is designed to manage and recover a wide variety of waste streams, making it a strategic site for the region’s circular economy.
The center includes administrative offices, its own vehicle fleet, parking and technical service areas, as well as a commercial and administrative team offering personalized customer support.
This infrastructure enables agile, safe, and efficient operations tailored to industrial needs.
The plant is organized into several specialized areas:
-
- Sorting, separation, and recovery plant, where waste is processed to extract recoverable materials.
- Conditioning and packaging plant for preparing recovered materials for reuse or recycling.
- Transfer center, facilitating logistics and the shipment of waste to authorized destinations.
- Class II controlled landfill, designated for materials that cannot be recovered.
Thanks to this multidisciplinary structure, the plant is equipped to maximize the value of non‑recyclable waste and transform it into useful resources such as RDF.
The departure of the first RDF truck highlights this potential and marks the beginning of regular supply operations, demonstrating TMA’s full operational capability.
