At TMA, we continue to make firm progress in reducing our environmental impact and improving waste management, making it increasingly efficient and sustainable. For this reason, we have obtained the 2023 Carbon Footprint Calculation Seal, awarded by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), which certifies the calculation and reporting of our carbon footprint. September 26, International Environmental Health Day, is an opportunity to remember that the quality of the environment in which we live directly influences our health and well-being, and we want to take this date to highlight our commitment to the environment and to people. In this article, we explain why this recognition is a key step in our sustainability strategy and, at the same time, a way to actively contribute to environmental health and a cleaner, healthier future. Because caring for the environment also means caring for our health.

HOW TMA CONTRIBUTES TO IMPROVING ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH

Environmental health and waste management are closely linked.

The relationship between the environment and our health is closer than we sometimes imagine. Breathing clean air, drinking water free of contaminants, living in spaces free of hazardous waste… All of this is part of what we call environmental health, a key concept for ensuring human well-being and the sustainability of the planet.

Therefore, we increasingly align our processes with criteria of sustainability, transparency, and continuous improvement.

Along these lines, we act consistently and are committed to continuously measuring, analyzing, and improving our impact.

Today, in the framework of International Environmental Health Day, we proudly share that we have obtained the “Calculation Seal”, awarded by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), for the second consecutive year.

This new recognition corresponds to the calculation of our carbon footprint for 2023, a key step in our sustainability strategy and climate commitment, thus consolidating a line of work that focuses on environmental responsibility as an essential part of our business model.

What is the MITECO’s Carbon Footprint Calculation Seal?

The Carbon Footprint Calculation Seal is the first level of MITECO’s official certifications within the Carbon Footprint, Offsetting, and CO₂ Absorption Projects Registry. It recognizes organizations that voluntarily measure their carbon footprint and report it transparently.

Therefore, the 2023 Carbon Footprint Calculation Seal certifies that we have measured the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated during 2023, especially those derived from our main activity: integrated waste management. It means that we have rigorously analyzed our emissions and are charting a roadmap toward a more environmentally friendly activity.

This recognition is more than a symbol: it implies transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement. Knowing our emissions data allows us to implement effective reduction measures and move toward the “Reduce” and “Offset” levels.

Furthermore, this new seal adds to the one we already obtained in 2022. Therefore, for two consecutive years, we have consolidated a clear strategic direction and a firm commitment to building a more sustainable and committed model.

Measuring emissions to improve our environmental commitment

At TMA, we understand that caring for the environment is not an option; it’s a responsibility. And we do so with actions:

    • We measure, analyze, and reduce our environmental footprint.
    • We are committed to technological and sustainable solutions throughout the entire value chain.
    • We integrate sustainability into our organizational culture and into every operational decision.

The 2023 Carbon Footprint Calculation Seal recognizes our efforts to measure, report, and thoroughly analyze the carbon footprint generated by our activities as a comprehensive waste management company, with the goal of identifying opportunities for improvement, reducing our environmental impact, and moving toward an increasingly sustainable model.

WHY MEASURING THE CARBON FOOTPRINT IS KEY

Calculating the carbon footprint allows us to accurately determine the volume of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by an organization in the course of its activities.

In our case, measuring the footprint has allowed us to implement actions such as:

    • Renewing the vehicle fleet with more efficient and less polluting options to minimize emissions from waste transportation.
    • Optimizing collection routes to reduce travel and fuel consumption.
    • Improvements in energy efficiency in our facilities and processes.

All of this contributes to reducing emissions and, consequently, better air quality, a healthier environment, and a more responsible value chain.

BEYOND RECYCLING: MEASURING EMISSIONS TO TRANSFORM WASTE MANAGEMENT

The Carbon Footprint Calculation Seal is not a final step, but a strategic tool for continued improvement.

Measuring our emissions allows us to precisely identify where to act and how to optimize processes, opening up new opportunities to strengthen the circular economy model that has guided our activity for years and to decisively advance toward our Zero Waste goal.

In the circular economy, waste is not conceived as an end, but rather as the beginning of a new production cycle. By measuring and analyzing our carbon footprint, we can redesign processes so that materials remain in use as long as possible, reducing the extraction of natural resources, energy consumption, and associated emissions.

The Zero Waste approach is the natural outcome of this model: minimizing as much as possible the amount of waste that cannot be recovered or reclaimed.

This involves not only recycling, but also preventing waste generation at its source, focusing on reuse, and ensuring that what cannot be reincorporated into the cycle is managed safely and responsibly.

This translates into:

    • Greater waste recovery: Materials previously considered waste are now reincorporated into the production chain, extending their useful life and avoiding disposal.
    • Boosting recovery and recycling: We close the materials cycle and significantly reduce the volume of final waste.
    • Process optimization and impact reduction: We implement continuous improvements that reduce emissions associated with waste management, transportation, and treatment, aligning each action with the goal of a zero-waste future.

Measuring is the first step to transforming waste management and making it more efficient, more circular, and geared toward zero waste.

WASTE MANAGEMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: A DIRECT RELATIONSHIP

Environmental health depends, in large part, on how we manage waste. Proper management prevents air, water, and soil pollution, reduces the risk of disease, and improves people’s quality of life.

At TMA, we have been working for decades on comprehensive and responsible waste management, structured around three main pillars:

Operational efficiency
We optimize every stage of the process to reduce consumption, time, and emissions. From collection to final treatment, every decision is based on sustainability criteria.

Recovery and Circular Economy
Our goal is clear: to ensure that nothing ends up where it shouldn’t.
Therefore, we prioritize waste recovery, recycling, and material recovery, aligned with the principles of the circular economy. Every properly treated waste is an opportunity to reintroduce resources into the production cycle. Therefore, we promote material recovery and are committed to turning every piece of waste into a resource.

Safety and traceability
We apply strict controls and follow the most demanding standards in traceability, environmental regulations, and safety in all our processes.

Additionally, we encourage environmental training among our teams, because we believe that sustainability starts from within.

At TMA, we believe that efficient and responsible waste management is one of the most effective levers for improving the health of the planet… and of people.

We are committed to a zero-waste approach, which prioritizes prevention, reuse, recycling, and recovery: turning waste into resources reduces emissions and protects the environment and environmental health.

Waste transportation: fewer emissions, better environmental health

At a company like TMA, where transportation plays a fundamental role in waste collection and treatment services, sustainable mobility is a priority.

We have identified transportation as a key area for reducing our carbon footprint.

Therefore, one of our areas of focus for improvement in recent years has been our waste transportation fleet.

At TMA, we have replaced part of our fleet with more efficient vehicles, prioritizing alternative fuels and optimizing routes to reduce unnecessary mileage and emissions.

For some time now, one of our main lines of action has been improving our logistics system:

    • We’ve renewed part of our vehicle fleet, incorporating more efficient models with a lower environmental impact. We have more than 250 vehicles, including electric and hybrid LPG models.
    • We apply sustainable logistics criteria, optimizing collection routes, reducing unnecessary travel, and responding more efficiently to any unforeseen events that may arise, all without affecting the quality of service.
    • We rely on technology and data to make smarter and more sustainable decisions on a daily basis.

These measures allow us to reduce the environmental footprint of our daily activities, directly contributing to a healthier environment.

All of this represents an operational improvement and also a commitment to a model that is more respectful of the environmental health of the areas where we operate: all our actions are aimed at reducing the environmental impact and carbon footprint of our daily activities.

OUR COMMITMENT: PROTECTING ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH THROUGH SUSTAINABILITY

Environmental health is achieved through a constant stream of responsible decisions.

Therefore, on this International Day of Environmental Health, we want to demonstrate how TMA is an innovative and sustainable management model:
