European Mobility Week: present and future of sustainable mobility
The European Mobility Week is being held from 16 to 22 September, an initiative to promote and publicise sustainable urban mobility alternatives. In this article we explain the importance and benefits of opting for low-emission mobility and you will discover how to promote sustainable mobility by travelling using alternative means of transport to the private car, such as cycling, public transport, walking or using hybrid or electric vehicles. It is the perfect time to start moving in a different and ecological way.
EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK
The main objective of the European Mobility Week is to promote more environmentally friendly forms of transport to improve the quality of life in our cities. The idea is to reduce air pollution, reduce noise and decongest traffic so that cities are healthier and more pleasant places to live.
Did you know that switching from a car to a bicycle to go to work, go shopping or take the children to school can avoid the emission of approximately 300 kg of CO2 per year, which is equivalent to planting 15 trees? If 100 people did it, 1,500 trees could be planted. If 100 people did it, in 100 cities, 150,000 trees could be planted.
Sustainable mobility allows us to be more aware and respectful of the environment in our urban travel. If we move towards efficient alternatives to move around the city (and also when moving outside it) we will achieve urban mobility that reduces the carbon footprint.
SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY IMPROVES THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN CITIES
Do you think you live in an environmentally friendly city? Do you think you have enough mobility alternatives to contribute to reducing the carbon footprint? Fortunately, there are many transport alternatives available to you to join sustainable urban mobility: there are more and more bike lanes, pedestrian zones, efficient public transport (with fleets of electric and hybrid buses or LPG), school paths…
These days, and every day, you can reflect on your travel habits and experiment with new ways of moving around the city. By doing so, you will achieve a positive impact on the environment and it will also be very positive for your health and well-being.
More and more people are joining the green mobility movement by travelling in electric or hybrid vehicles, bicycles and public transport to reduce their carbon footprint.
Urban mobility alternatives can make your journeys to and from work, for example, much more pleasant. You will no longer be stuck in a traffic jam for hours and you can enjoy the fresh air on your bike or reading a good book on public transport.
In addition, you may discover your city from a different perspective: leave aside the monotony and stress of the car, traffic jams, traffic, searching for parking… you may discover a new way of getting around and it may become your favourite way of getting around the city. Following the motto of the European Mobility Week, mix and match!
Nowadays, shared public space is encouraged in cities with the aim of making cities a place where people, modes of transport and activities have their own space and are cities with more social equity, more road safety, less noise and air pollution and a better quality of life.
The SEM invites us to share our public space and to move in a more environmentally friendly way to live in pleasant and safe environments for everyone.
HOW COMPANIES CAN PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY
Companies are the lever for change in many areas of society. And they are also in the promotion of green mobility, both for its direct impact on the environment and for its influence on the habits of employees.
Can you imagine how you would feel if you worked in a company that encourages the use of public transport, bicycles or electric or hybrid vehicles? You would surely feel good.
It has been proven that companies that implement and promote environmentally-friendly mobility policies help reduce CO2 emissions and also improve the health and well-being of workers and, in general, the work environment.
These are some initiatives that companies that want to be part of the change and reduce their carbon footprint can implement:
- Encourage bicycle use: secure bicycle facilities can be provided so employees can cycle to work.
- Promote public transport: public transport passes can be provided.
- Promote carpooling: carpooling with colleagues can significantly reduce the number of vehicles on the roads and also fosters employee relations and improves the working environment.
- Adopt electric, hybrid or LPG vehicles for the corporate fleet: these are more environmentally friendly vehicles and can also reduce costs in the long term. In addition, installing charging stations on company premises encourages employees to consider purchasing these types of vehicles because they know they have a place where they can charge their vehicles during working hours.
- Promote teleworking and flexible hours: this measure helps reduce the need for daily travel, reduces traffic and emissions and can also improve productivity and job satisfaction.
BENEFITS OF SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY
Environmentally friendly urban mobility is the present and future of cities because it is the solution to take care of the environment and improve people’s health and quality of life.
Improves air quality
Sustainable mobility has a direct impact on air quality. By reducing the use of private vehicles and promoting alternatives such as public transport and bicycles, the emission of polluting gases is reduced, improving public health and air quality in cities and protecting the environment.
Reduction in noise pollution
Noise in cities is reduced because electric and hybrid vehicles are quieter than traditional vehicles.
Improvements in public health and quality of life
The use of public transport brings us closer to the goal of “car-free cities”, or with fewer cars. As traffic is reduced, noise is reduced and road safety is improved, creating a calmer and safer environment for citizens. Walking and cycling contribute to reducing cardiovascular diseases, obesity and stress.
Conservation and saving of energy and natural resources
The increase in travel by electric or hybrid vehicles reduces oil and gas consumption, promoting a more resilient and respectful economy. In addition, these practices promote the Circular Economy and favor the preservation of natural spaces and the reduction of the ecological footprint.
Create healthier urban environments
Urban mobility alternatives promote the creation of accessible and efficient environments for citizens, making it easier for them to access them by public transport. Some initiatives related to public space are the creation of pedestrian zones, the improvement of sidewalks and the reduction of traffic in residential areas.
Innovation and efficiency
New technologies are applied in urban transport in cities, optimizing services, obtaining real data on the frequency and use of lines. In this way, routes can be optimized and the public transport service provided to citizens can be improved.
Economic savings
If you travel by bicycle or with an electric or hybrid car, you will have considerable economic savings on fuel and other frequent expenses such as insurance, parking or maintenance.
Creating jobs
The transition to green mobility is already creating thousands of jobs in sectors related to technology and transport infrastructure.
Ultimately, efficient mobility contributes to creating cities that are more inclusive, safe, accessible, habitable and healthy for people and more sustainable in the future.
TMA’S FLEET CONTRIBUTES TO SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY
We promote low-emission mobility with our extensive fleet, as we have a wide variety of vehicles equipped with the latest technological advances, with which we can offer an agile and personalized service for the transport of waste, selective collection and itinerant compaction of industrial, non-hazardous and hazardous waste (solid and liquid).
Our land fleet is made up of more than 200 vehicles of 11 different types, including electric and LPG hybrid models. We apply innovation through a geolocation system via mobile devices, to monitor the status of all operational services in real time.
The new technologies applied to our fleet of vehicles allow us to be more efficient in the services we provide: by optimizing routes, we reduce the environmental impact.
TMA vehicles reduce greenhouse gas emissions and also contribute to improving air quality in urban areas.
THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY IS THE MOST EFFICIENT ALTERNATIVE IN WASTE MANAGEMENT
We contribute to the Circular Economy and that is why we work to recycle the largest amount of waste, innovating, developing and implementing solutions to extend its life cycle. We recover and valorise all those materials that can be recycled, giving them a new life, recovering waste and converting it into resources. Waste is an opportunity to create new products with different uses and thus minimise the impact of waste on the environment.
At TMA we work with the Zero Waste philosophy because it is our way of understanding, managing and treating waste. We offer the most efficient treatment and recycling solutions for any type of waste generated and we reduce the negative environmental impact of not recycling and directly disposing of waste.
We take care of our clients and we take care of the environment.
We are much more than comprehensive waste management.
