However, it also generates a wide variety of waste types that require specialized management. Ensuring that this waste is properly treated is key to ensuring that research can be conducted in a safe and environmentally friendly environment. Therefore, it is essential to have a waste management system that protects people, ensures regulatory compliance, and minimizes environmental impact. At TMA, we have been awarded the contract for the comprehensive waste management of biomedical and industrial waste at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), and we will make it possible. Our commitment to this project is comprehensive and includes the removal, transportation, and management of all waste, with a focus on the Circular Economy and minimizing environmental impact.

RESEARCH AND WASTE MANAGEMENT: INNOVATION AND EFFICIENCY

Biomedical research is one of the major levers of social progress and is advancing rapidly, generating knowledge that improves our quality of life.

But this progress comes with an environmental responsibility: ensuring that waste derived from work in laboratories and research centers is managed properly.

At TMA, we understand that there can be no quality science without quality waste management.

We have been awarded the tender for the comprehensive management of biomedical and industrial waste at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB).

This project is more than just a contract: it is a partnership between science and sustainability.

And it represents a great opportunity for TMA: to support the PRBB in its commitment to safety, health, and sustainability.

The management of waste generated at the PRBB is not simply a logistical issue. It is a fundamental element in ensuring safety, the continuity of research, and respect for and care of the environment.

This project reinforces our mission as a waste management company that partners with scientific institutions in their progress toward more sustainable research models.

Which PRBB centers are included in the project?

TMA will manage the waste for these four institutions:

    • PRBB Consortium (CPRBB).
    • Hospital del Mar Research Institute (HMRIB).
    • Pompeu Fabra University (UPF).
    • Barcelona Institute for Applied Radiopharmacy (IRAB).

The activities of these centers generate extremely diverse types of waste, often high-risk. Proper management of this waste is an essential pillar of the center’s daily operations.

COMPREHENSIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT AT THE PRBB

The project covers different groups of waste, each with specific technical and regulatory requirements.

Non-hazardous waste (Group I): Municipal waste (organic, packaging, glass, paper).

Hazardous biomedical waste (Group III): Biological material with infectious potential and sharp and cutting materials requiring sterilization or incineration.

Chemical and cytotoxic waste (Group IV): Hazardous chemical substances and remains of cytotoxic drugs with carcinogenic, mutagenic, or teratogenic properties. (Radioactive waste is excluded.)

Specific research waste: sawdust from animal facilities and carcasses of experimental animals.

Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), confidential paper, batteries, cold gel packs, and industrial fats and oils.

At TMA, we will contribute our experience and technical capacity to ensure safe, traceable, and sustainable management at all stages.

THE PILLARS OF INTEGRATED WASTE MANAGEMENT

The waste management that TMA will implement for the PRBB is based on these fundamental pillars:

Minimization and separation at source: We will work closely with PRBB researchers and staff to optimize waste segregation. Proper separation at source is the first and most important step to enable its subsequent recovery. We will provide the necessary approved containers and receptacles (from 5L chemoboxes for hazardous waste to 20m³ containers for sawdust) and offer ongoing training to ensure the success of this process.

Absolute traceability and regulatory compliance: We guarantee the complete traceability of each waste, from its collection in the laboratory to its final treatment in our authorized plants. We operate with transparency, submitting the regulatory documentation.

Recovery is a priority: Our goal is to prioritize management pathways that enable the material or energy recovery of waste. Organic waste will be converted into compost or biogas, packaging will be recycled, and waste suitable for incineration will contribute to energy generation.

Innovation and continuous improvement: We are committed to being an active partner, suggesting innovations in packaging and containers, logistics, and processes to increase the efficiency and sustainability of the waste management service.

SAFETY IN THE MANAGEMENT OF WASTE FROM RESEARCH

Safety is a value that is always present in the services we provide at TMA and will be present in the comprehensive waste management we will carry out for the PRBB.

Our protocols are designed to protect the health of people and the environment:

Specialized personnel: We have trained technicians with hazardous materials handler licenses and ADR transport permits, specifically assigned to the PRBB.

Safe transport: Vehicles authorized and adapted for each type of waste, complying with all dangerous goods regulations.

Action protocols: Contingency plans for emergencies and a rapid response.

Each center (CPRBB, HMRIB, UPF, IRAB) will have its own contact representative at TMA to manage its specific GIII and GIV waste needs, billing, and training, while the PRBB Consortium coordinates the overall service.

This structure streamlines communication and ensures that each institution receives a service tailored to its needs.

BEYOND DISPOSAL: RECOVERY AND THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY

Our commitment will be to apply the principles of the circular economy whenever possible because much of the waste generated at the PRBB can be given a second life through recovery processes:

    • Electronic waste (WEEE): can be recycled to recover high-value metals and components.
    • Confidential paper: after safe destruction, it can be used for cellulose recycling.
    • Batteries: allow the extraction and recovery of heavy metals such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt, essential for the technology industry.
    • Industrial oils: can undergo regeneration processes for reuse as lubricants or fuels.
    • Toners and plastics: can be recovered through mechanical or chemical recycling.

This approach helps reduce the environmental impact, improve resource efficiency, and reinforce the PRBB’s image as a center committed to sustainability.

At TMA, we contribute to closing the loop between research and sustainability.

TRANSPORTATION AND TRACEABILITY: SAFETY AND CONTROL AT ALL TIMES

At TMA, we know that waste transportation is error-free.

We will manage waste by implementing an efficient and safe transportation system and full traceability, ensuring absolute control from the moment the waste leaves the PRBB until its final treatment.

    • Authorized and adapted fleet: All our vehicles are approved for the transportation of hazardous waste and undergo strict technical inspections. Their design guarantees the safety of the load and operators.
    • Real-time geolocation: The vehicles are equipped with GPS systems that allow the location of the waste to be monitored at all times, reinforcing transparency.
    • Guaranteed regulatory compliance: As authorized waste managers, we comply with all the requirements of current regulations.
    • Operational efficiency: We plan collection routes and frequencies tailored to the needs of each center, reducing wait times and optimizing resources.

Thanks to this comprehensive system, waste transportation is safe, efficient, and fully traceable, protecting people, respecting the environment, and facilitating research work.

A STRATEGIC ALLIANCE FOR EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH

Responsible waste management is a lever for environmental innovation and an opportunity to align science, health, and sustainability under the principles of the Circular Economy.

The PRBB is an international benchmark in biomedical research that is moving toward an increasingly sustainable research model, where protecting occupational health, minimizing waste, and recovering materials are essential parts of its daily operations.

The PRBB’s waste management reinforces our mission as a company: to be a strategic ally of scientific institutions in the transition toward more sustainable research models.
