TMA strengthens its commitment to sustainability and the safe and efficient management of healthcare waste with this tender for the Girona University Hospital Doctor Josep Trueta, which includes the supply of approved containers, transport and treatment of waste. This new project reaffirms TMA’s ability to efficiently manage hospital waste, both Group I (similar to municipal waste) and Group II (non-specific healthcare waste). In addition, certified destruction of confidential documentation will be carried out. With all this, TMA contributes to improving the efficiency and sustainability at sanitary waste management of this reference healthcare centre.
HOSPITAL WASTE MANAGEMENT
TMA strengthens its commitment to sustainability and the responsible management of hospital waste through this new tender for the Girona University Hospital Doctor Josep Trueta.
The project covers everything from the supply of approved containers to the collection and transport, classification, treatment and certified destruction of waste, including confidential documentation. Throughout the process we will comply with waste and environmental regulations, guaranteeing traceability and maximising recycling and recovery opportunities.
The waste we will manage is the following:
-
- Group I: Waste similar to urban waste, such as paper and cardboard, which is recyclable and can be reintegrated into the production cycle. Organic, glass and banal waste will also be managed.
- Group II: Inert and non-special sanitary waste, which requires special management due to its origin and the regulations governing its treatment.
- Other bulky waste.
- Destruction of confidential documentation and the corresponding certification.
TMA will be responsible for:
-
- The provision of compacting containers with lift-dumpers.
- The change of compacting containers.
- Transport to the treatment plants.
- The treatment of waste.
- The electronic processing of documentation in the SDR of the Waste Agency according to current regulations.
Sanitary waste: efficient management and public health
In terms of volume, this is the estimate of waste that we will manage:
-
- 1,360 tons of sanitary waste (Group I and II), essential to guarantee health and environmental safety.
- 360 tons of paper and cardboard, recovered for reuse, contributing to the Circular Economy.
- Vulusive waste, which includes furniture and other materials that require specific processes for their correct handling and treatment.
The comprehensive approach that we will implement in this tender guarantees regulatory compliance and reinforces TMA’s commitment to efficient waste management, public health and safety, and to reducing environmental impact.
HOW TO OPTIMIZE WASTE MANAGEMENT IN HOSPITALS: KEYS TO SAFE MANAGEMENT
In the healthcare sector, the correct management of hospital waste is a crucial challenge.
This waste represents a risk to health and the environment and also offers an opportunity to implement sustainable practices.
At TMA, we apply rigorous protocols to ensure its safe handling and the most appropriate treatment for each type of waste:
-
- Segregation at source: We provide the hospital with approved containers that ensure the proper separation of this waste from the outset.
- Specialized transport: We use vehicles equipped to avoid any risk during transport, ensuring full traceability of the waste.
- Advanced treatment: Biomedical waste is subjected to disinfection and sterilization processes, minimizing its environmental impact and guaranteeing safe final disposal.
Collection of hospital waste
We provide the hospital with a wide range of approved and specific containers for each type of waste.
These containers facilitate segregation at source, optimize internal handling and ensure the safety of healthcare workers.
We use advanced technology, such as hermetic compactors and lift-tilter systems, ensuring the correct segregation and recycling of waste.
Confidential material in hospitals
The management of confidential material, especially in the hospital setting, requires efficient management to ensure the security of information and compliance with current regulations.
The confidential material of the Hospital Universitari de Girona is managed with strict procedures that include secure storage, controlled transport and certified destruction.
We know that this waste contains sensitive data and can have an environmental impact if not handled properly. Therefore, our commitment is based on offering a comprehensive service that ensures confidentiality, protects privacy and contributes to sustainability.
Safe and environmentally friendly waste transport
The transport of hospital waste is one of the most critical stages of the process.
At TMA we have approved vehicles equipped with advanced technologies that guarantee safety during transport.
These vehicles are designed to minimise carbon emissions and are subject to regular checks to comply with the strictest environmental standards.
Each vehicle in our own fleet, which has more than 250 vehicles of 11 different types, has real-time tracking systems, allowing us to monitor the traceability of waste from the hospital to our treatment plants.
Sanitary waste treatment plants
Waste from the Hospital Universitari de Girona is transported to our treatment plants located in Sant Cugat, where we apply specific processes depending on the type of waste.
-
- Our facilities are equipped with cutting-edge technology to separate and treat waste appropriately, maximising its use.
- Non-hazardous waste is processed for recycling and recovery, turning it into new resources that are reincorporated into the Circular Economy.
Safety in hospital waste management
In the hospital context, safety is a fundamental aspect in waste management.
Healthcare waste requires special attention due to its hazardous potential and because improper handling of this waste can put public health and the environment at risk.
At TMA we have all the necessary safety protocols in place to ensure that the waste generated by the Girona University Hospital is treated safely at all stages of the process, from collection to final disposal.
In addition, we work closely with the hospital to ensure that all staff are properly trained in waste segregation and handling, helping to create a safer environment for patients, healthcare staff and the community in general.
HOW TO REDUCE THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF HOSPITALS
Circular Economy and Zero Waste philosophy in hospital waste management
The hospital sector faces unique challenges in terms of waste management due to the diversity and danger of waste. Poor management can have serious consequences for public health and the environment: efficient management avoids unnecessary risks.
With this project we have the opportunity to significantly reduce the hospital’s environmental footprint.
At TMA, we integrate the Zero Waste philosophy and the principles of the Circular Economy into each stage of the biomedical and healthcare waste management that we carry out with the Hospital Universitari de Girona.
TMA’s Zero Waste philosophy promotes the recovery of resources at each stage of the process, prioritizing recovery over disposal.
-
- We implement strict protocols to ensure that each type of waste is managed in accordance with current regulations and with a Circular Economy approach, minimizing environmental impacts and maximizing resource recovery.
- Efficient and responsible management of sanitary waste protects the health of patients and workers and also reinforces the reputation of the hospital as an institution committed to sustainability and safety.
This allows the hospital to comply with environmental regulations and, in turn, position itself as a benchmark in the healthcare sector for its commitment to sustainability and care for the environment and reinforces the role of the healthcare sector as a promoter of responsible and safe practices for the benefit of health and the environment.
BENEFITS OF EFFICIENT MANAGEMENT OF SANITARY ANB BIOMEDICAL WASTE
Correct management of hospital waste generates numerous benefits, both for healthcare institutions and for the environment:
-
- Regulatory compliance: We ensure that the hospital complies with all applicable regulations, avoiding sanctions and strengthening its reputation as a responsible institution.
- Reduction of environmental impact: We prioritize the recovery and recycling of waste, contributing to the reduction of pollution and the use of resources.
- Safety for workers and patients: Proper waste management minimizes the risk of exposure to infectious or dangerous agents.
- Optimization of internal processes: By outsourcing waste management, the hospital can fully concentrate on its healthcare work.
