WASTE MANAGEMENT AT THE TORREFERRUSSA WILDLIFE RECOVERY CENTER
Waste management is a vital component in the operation of any infrastructure, but it becomes an especially critical challenge in places like the Torreferrussa Wildlife Recovery Center.
These centers, which operate as animal hospitals, face unique complexity when managing the waste derived from their daily activities.
TMA, as a leading waste management company, has been awarded the contract to manage the waste at the Torreferrussa Wildlife Center and takes on this challenge with commitment and responsibility, ensuring that all waste is treated responsibly and sustainably.
Types of waste managed at Torreferrussa
The daily activities of the Torreferrussa Wildlife Center generate a variety of waste that require differentiated management.
The main types of waste included in the tender and TMA’s approach to managing them are detailed below:
-
- Ordinary waste comparable to urban waste: This type of waste includes materials that do not present specific risks (including common materials such as food scraps, used paper, or small disposable objects) and can be treated similarly to urban waste. TMA ensures the safe and efficient collection of this waste, adapting to seasonal demands, especially during the summer months, when the center’s activity intensifies. This waste is sorted and treated in specialized plants, prioritizing the recovery and upgrading of recyclable materials.
- Plastic and/or packaging waste: This waste mainly comes from single-use materials. TMA is responsible for sorting and processing these materials for recycling, contributing to the circular economy.
- Clean paper and cardboard waste: Recycling paper and cardboard is essential to reducing the demand on forest resources. We carry out the necessary collections, and these materials are transported to recycling facilities where they are converted into new paper products.
- Runa-type waste: Generated by maintenance activities, this waste requires specific 2 m³ containers for easy handling. TMA ensures its proper collection, transportation, and treatment.
Handling each of these wastes involves a customized approach, from the provision of approved containers, safe and sustainable transportation, and final treatment in our treatment plants and specialized facilities.

Waste collection and treatment at the Torreferrussa Wildlife Center
Waste management at Torreferrussa requires a highly organized logistical approach.
Throughout the year, collection frequency varies to adapt to the center’s specific needs. In June and July, the service is intensified to cope with the increase in activity.
Once collected, the waste is transported to our own facilities for the specialized treatment required for each type of waste.
Separation, recycling, and final disposal are carried out at the TMA plants, strictly following current regulations.
This system ensures that each type of waste is treated appropriately, minimizing its environmental impact.
IMPACT OF WASTE MANAGEMENT ON BIODIVERSITY AND WILDLIFE PROTECTION
Proper waste management in settings dedicated to the rehabilitation and conservation of wildlife is essential to protect both the animals and the ecosystems that surround them.
Poor management can lead to serious problems, such as soil and water contamination, the spread of disease, or the presence of pests that threaten the health of recovering species.
At the Torreferrussa Wildlife Recovery Center, many of the species cared for are vulnerable due to the degradation of their habitat.
Proper waste segregation, treatment, and disposal minimizes these risks and directly contributes to their well-being.
TMA implements specific measures to ensure that waste does not interfere with the ecological balance of the center:
-
- Safe management of hazardous waste: Minimizes wildlife exposure to toxic substances or pollutants.
- Efficient collection of organic waste: Prevents the spread and transmission of diseases to recovering animals.
- Promoting recycling: Reduces the center’s environmental footprint and promotes more efficient use of resources.
With this approach, we ensure regulatory compliance and reinforce our commitment and that of the Torreferrussa Wildlife Center to biodiversity and the conservation of protected species.
WASTE MANAGEMENT AS A PILLAR IN BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION
Proper waste management ensures the center’s efficient operation and is also essential to protecting the species cared for there.
At the Torreferrussa Wildlife Recovery Center, waste management is essential to:
-
- Prevent contamination: Prevent hazardous materials or poorly managed waste from negatively impacting nearby habitats.
- Minimize health risks: Reduce the possibility of disease transmission among animals.
- Promote safe environments: Ensure that work and rehabilitation spaces are suitable for both employees and animals.
Proper waste management is crucial to the center’s operation and also to the health and well-being of the animals.
Pollution prevention and proper waste disposal significantly reduce the risks of disease transmission and exposure to harmful substances.
Commitment to wildlife and animal welfare
The Torreferrussa Wildlife Center stands out for its conservation programs, such as the rehabilitation of the lesser kestrel (Falco naumanni) and the captive breeding of the Montseny newt (Calotriton arnoldi).
Both cases illustrate how efficient waste management creates the necessary conditions for the success of these initiatives.
-
- Lesser kestrel: Proper waste management in breeding and rehabilitation areas reduces the risk of stress and exposure to pollutants for these endangered birds.
- Montseny newt: The protection of this endemic amphibian depends largely on an environment free of chemical and biological contaminants, guaranteed by professional waste management.
ZERO WASTE PHILOSOPHY AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY IN WASTE MANAGEMENT AT THE TORREFERRUSSA WILDLIFE CENTER
TMA’s commitment to sustainability is based on the principles of the Zero Waste philosophy and the Circular Economy, whose objectives are to minimize waste generation and maximize its reuse and recycling.
