The Barcelona Ship Shipping Agents Association celebrated yesterday, June 13, the ninth edition of Shipping Agent Day 2023.
The event is the meeting point for the shipping agent community, a group that acts as an intermediary between the owner of a vessel in ports (whether a shipowner or shipowner) and the recipient of the transported goods. They are responsible for managing everything related to the unloading and delivery of cargo according to the ship’s requirements. They can represent various shipping companies.
Shipping Agent Day brought together Barcelona’s logistics and port community at the Hotel El Palace Barcelona and was attended by authorities and institutional representatives such as the President of the Port of Barcelona, Lluís Salvadó; the Administrator of Barcelona Customs, Josep Carles Llagostera; the Maritime Captain of the Port of Barcelona, Francisco Javier Valencia; the Regional Minister of Territory of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Juli Fernández; the Secretary of Territory and Mobility, Joan Jaume; the Secretary of Mobility and Infrastructure, Marc Sanglas; and the Director General of Transport and Mobility, Oriol Martori.
Jordi Trius, president of the Association of Shipping Agents of Barcelona, stated that “this meeting serves to highlight the importance of one of the oldest professions linked to Barcelona’s commercial port activity.” Shipping agents and agents of national and international shipping companies “have played and continue to play a fundamental role in global maritime trade, despite the vicissitudes of the last four years.”
The Association’s objectives are to provide advice and promote the professional prestige of this group, representing various management bodies of the Port of Barcelona and collaborating closely with the Port Authority and other bodies.

WE ARE SPONSORS OF THE CONFERENCE IN SUPPORT OF THE WORK DEVELOPED BY THE ASSOCIATION
TMA, which operates in the Port of Barcelona for the treatment of ship (MARPOL) and industrial waste, is committed to the sector and, therefore, participated in the event as one of its sponsoring companies.
We handle the management of MARPOL waste (Annexes I, II, IV, V, and VI) from all types of vessels (cruise ships, merchant vessels, fishing vessels, etc.), industrial water treatment, material recovery (plastic, paper and cardboard, metal, fuel oil, etc.), biomedical waste management, and the destruction of confidential materials.
DECARBONIZATION AND DIGITALIZATION, THE ASSOCIATION’S MAIN CHALLENGES
The Barcelona Shipping Agents Association faces various challenges in the coming years regarding decarbonization and digitalization that “will directly impact the daily activities of the 43 companies that currently form part of the entity. These shipping agents provide services to and represent more than 100 shipping companies operating with different types of vessels and, as members of the association, are part of a professional group that has been adding value to the Barcelona port community for more than 100 years,” concludes the statement from the Barcelona Shipping Agents Association.
