MARPOL
At our state-of-the-art facilities in the Port of Barcelona we manage MARPOL waste according to the international standards for preventing pollution from ships, established in the Maritime Convention MARPOL 73/78 and Directive 2000/59/EC.
We comprehensively manage the following MARPOL waste annexes:
- MARPOL I: relating to regulations for the prevention of oil pollution; it deals with waste from oil-contaminated waters.
- MARPOL II: rules for the prevention of pollution by noxious liquid substances transported in bulk.
- MARPOL IV: rules for the prevention of pollution from ships’ foul water.
- MARPOL V: rules to prevent pollution caused by garbage from ships; this is ordinary solid waste generated on board ships.
- MARPOL VI: rules for the prevention of air pollution from ships.

We are the company of reference in MARPOL transport and waste management solutions, as we have our own maritime and land fleet.
For waste collection by sea, we have two of our own vessels, equipped with the latest technology:
- JAK UNO barge: intended for the collection of hydrocarbon residues, bilge water and similar MARPOL I.
It has a storage capacity of 230 m³ of oily liquids.
It has a length of 27 meters.
- JAK DOS barge: intended for the collection of general waste and recoverable materials (MARPOL V), as main activity, but can also be used for MARPOL waste management.
It has a storage capacity of 32.5 m³ of oily liquids.
It has a length of 18 meters.
It is used for collecting solid wastes on ships (MARPOL V) and collecting oily liquid wastes and storing them in tanks below deck.

- ADR-coded tanks for the collection and transport of MARPOL I, II waste and industrial water, with capacities ranging from 7 to 30 m³ per tank.
- More than 200 trucks for the collection and transport of MARPOL V waste and solid waste (general and recoverable materials) at terminals. We have a wide variety of vehicles, of different capacities and types (you can see them all in the Vehicles and equipment section).
Treatment
TMA has its own laboratory to characterize MARPOL waste and manage it according to the corresponding treatment line at our plant in the Port of Barcelona. Specifically, we provide our customers with 5 waste treatment lines::
- Hydrocarbon Line: hydrocarbon residues, bilge water and similar (MARPOL I) for fuel recovery.
- Industrial Water Line: aqueous liquid waste (MARPOL I by-products).
- Stabilization and Inertization System Line: solid / pasty waste (MARPOL by-products).
- Non-Hazardous Waste Recovery and Transfer Center (Marpol V): general waste and recoverable materials.
- Hazardous Waste Recovery and Transfer Center: liquid and solid hazardous waste (MARPOL V Category F).
Safety and certification
Once the relevant services have been performed, TMA provides its clients with the corresponding certificates.
We have the ISO 9001 Quality Management System Certification, ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Certification and ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System Certification.
We also have the quality mark of the Port of Barcelona Efficiency Network.
