Proper management of healthcare waste is a vital necessity in hospital facilities, biomedical research centers, and all organizations dedicated to preserving public health. The Banc de Sang i Teixits – BST (Blood and Tissue Bank) is committed to public health and sustainability and requires rigorous planning and regulatory compliance in the management of the waste generated at its facilities. TMA is the company awarded the contract to collect, transport, and process Group II healthcare waste generated at the Blood and Tissue Bank’s facilities. This includes the implementation of measures to ensure traceability, safety, and compliance with current regulations. With this new project, we continue to consolidate our leadership in healthcare waste management and reaffirm our commitment to sustainable and safe practices.
IMPORTANCE OF EFFICIENT HEALTHCARE WASTE MANAGEMENT

Proper waste management in healthcare settings is essential to ensure the safety of patients, healthcare personnel, and the environment.
Inefficiently managed waste can be harmful, pose risks, and negatively impact patients, healthcare workers, and public health.
In this context, TMA is the company awarded the BST healthcare waste collection and management service, reaffirming both parties’ commitment to sustainability and safety.
THE BLOOD AND TISSUE BANK (BANC DE SANG I TEIXITS) AND TMA, COMMITTED TO PUBLIC HEALTH AND SUSTAINABILITY

The Blood and Tissue Bank (Banc de Sang i Teixits BST), as a public entity dedicated to the collection, processing, and distribution of blood and tissues, generates a variety of waste that requires specialized management.
This project will efficiently manage BST Group II healthcare waste.
The main objective of this tender is to ensure proper waste management throughout the entire process: identification, correct segregation, packaging, adequate storage, transportation, and proper management of healthcare waste, ensuring traceability, safety, and compliance with current regulations.
TMA will ensure healthcare safety and minimize the environmental impact of the waste generated in the healthcare activities of the Blood and Tissue Bank.
TMA’s expertise in healthcare waste management will contribute to improving BST processes, ensuring a safer environment for patients and staff, and reinforcing sustainable practices in the healthcare sector.
MEDICAL WASTE FROM THE BANC DE SANG I TEIXITS

Our priority is to offer a comprehensive and specialized service in healthcare waste management, helping to ensure safety and sustainability in the healthcare sector.
TMA will be responsible for the comprehensive and specialized management of Group II healthcare waste, also known as non-specific or low-risk healthcare waste. This is waste generated in healthcare activities that does not pose a significant risk to public health.
The management of Group II healthcare waste is essential to ensuring safety in hospital environments and biomedical research centers.
What is Group II healthcare waste?
Medical waste that, due to its nature and composition, is inert or non-special, and does not pose any special management requirements outside the facility.
However, within the facility, it may pose a risk to patients with weakened immune systems and may also cause eye rejection or obsessions.
Group II waste includes materials such as gauze, dressings, bandages, gloves, masks, casts, and other disposable items that have been in contact with blood, secretions, or other fluids, but are not considered infectious.
This waste, although it does not pose a significant risk to public health outside the hospital environment, requires proper handling and treatment within healthcare facilities to ensure the safety of patients and staff.
Although its hazard is lower compared to other types of waste, its proper management is essential to maintain a safe healthcare environment and comply with current regulations.
As part of the project with the Blood and Tissue Bank (Banc de Sang i Teixits BST), TMA will be exclusively responsible for the comprehensive management of Group II waste, ensuring its handling, transportation, and treatment in accordance with current regulations.
Approved containers for the safe collection of healthcare waste
For the collection and storage of Group II healthcare waste, TMA provides the BST with approved containers that meet the required technical specifications:
Resistant material: Made with materials that guarantee impermeability and puncture resistance.
-
- Totally leak-proof, to prevent spills.
- Opacity, to prevent visual rejection.
- Adequate capacity: Available in different sizes, adapting to specific needs.
- Hermetic closure, with locking systems that prevent spills and odor emissions.
- Clear labeling: visible identification of the type of waste and group to which it belongs, facilitating its correct classification and handling.
TMA will provide the BST with 1 m³ containers to facilitate the efficient and safe storage, collection and transportation of Group II healthcare waste, minimizing risks and facilitating its subsequent treatment.
SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION OF HEALTHCARE WASTE

The collection and transportation of healthcare waste represents a fundamental pillar for ensuring efficient, safe, and sustainable management.
TMA provides its experience and resources to meet the specific requirements of the BST, integrating advanced logistics solutions with a firm environmental commitment.
TMA has its own fleet of more than 250 vehicles specially designed for the collection and transportation of healthcare waste.
Our vehicles are designed to maintain the integrity of the waste during transportation, ensuring optimal hygiene and safety conditions.
All vehicles are authorized by the Catalan Waste Agency, as required by the BST tender specifications, ensuring that each transfer is carried out in compliance with established legal and environmental standards.
Safety and Efficiency in Waste Transportation
To meet the logistical needs of the Blood and Tissue Bank (Banc de Sang i Teixits), TMA guarantees:
-
- Logistics planning: TMA designs collection routes efficiently, taking into account time slots, waste characteristics, and health and safety requirements.
- Geolocation and traceability systems: All transportation services are monitored in real time, allowing the exact location of waste to be known from collection to final treatment, ensuring traceability.
- Qualified and continuously trained personnel: TMA drivers and technicians receive specific training in the handling and transportation of healthcare waste. This includes proper management in special situations or in the event of incidents, as requested in the tender.
- Commitment to safety and sustainability: Healthcare waste transportation is carried out following strict protocols that guarantee the safety of staff, BST facilities, and the surrounding environment.
This efficient logistics management reinforces TMA and the Blood and Tissue Bank’s commitment to responsible, transparent, and environmentally friendly waste management, key aspects always, and especially in the healthcare sector.
CIRCULAR ECONOMY AND ZERO WASTE IN HEALTHCARE WASTE MANAGEMENT
The project that TMA is carrying out with the Blood and Tissue Bank is based on a shared vision of the importance of efficiency and sustainability in healthcare waste management.
TMA has obtained the Zero Waste certification, which recognizes organizations that recover at least 90% of their waste.
This certification endorses our efficient waste management model, and we will work with this commitment for the BST in the management of its healthcare waste.
Therefore, at every stage of the healthcare waste management process, we minimize waste as much as possible.
To achieve this, the following actions are implemented:
-
- Material Reuse: Material reuse is promoted whenever possible, reducing the need for new resources.
- Recycling Optimization: Advanced separation and sorting systems are applied to maximize the recovery of useful materials.
- Efficient Waste Management: Organized management is ensured to reduce waste generation and prepare waste for reuse or transformation into new raw materials, reintroducing it into the value chain.
This project reinforces the commitment of both entities to an environmentally responsible management model that reduces the environmental impact of healthcare waste.
