TMA has been awarded the contract for the management and collection of waste generated in the laboratories of the Center for Forestry Science and Technology of Catalonia (CTFC). HOW TMA EFFICIENTLY MANAGES CTFC WASTE

 

This new project aims to provide the collection, transportation, and treatment service for laboratory waste generated by the Centre for Forestry Science and Technology of Catalonia (CTFC).

This service will be provided at its two locations, in Solsona and El Pi de Sant Just, for an initial period of four years, with the possibility of extension.

The services that TMA will provide range from the supply of suitable containers to the treatment and transportation of waste, following all established environmental regulations. 

These are the services that will be provided:

    • Necessary administrative management: treatment contract, acceptance forms, and follow-up documentation.
    • Supply of appropriate containers for each type of waste, their collection and replacement as they become full.
    • Waste collection, transportation, and treatment.
    • Ensuring compliance with environmental and occupational safety regulations.

Throughout this project, TMA is committed to sustainable and efficient waste management, thereby reducing the carbon footprint and ensuring proper treatment to minimize the environmental impact of the waste generated.

 

Key services in the CTFC’s comprehensive waste management

The waste management service provided by TMA for the CTFC will include the following specific activities:

    • Documentation Processing: This includes the management of the documentation required by current legislation for the proper collection and transportation of waste (treatment contract, acceptance form, mobile monitoring sheet, and advance notification of transfer).
    • Container Delivery: This service includes the supply of 60L plastic drums with hermetic seals for proper waste collection.
      • TMA will ensure that full drums are replaced with empty ones, as well as the supply of additional drums if the types of waste generated by the center expand.
      • The delivery of the drums will include the placement of identification labels in accordance with current regulations.
    • Waste Collection. The waste to be collected is:
      • Recoverable plastic containers.
      • Glass containers with special waste.
      • Recoverable metal containers.
      • Non-halogenated solvents.
      • Non-halogenated neutral organic solutions.
      • Acidic inorganic solutions without heavy metals.

 

Each type of waste has its own regulations and handling requirements, and TMA has an approved fleet and specialized team with experience in managing this waste.

 

TYPES OF WASTE GENERATED AT THE FOREST SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CENTER OF CATALONIA (CTFC) AND ITS TREATMENT

 

The waste generated in the CTFC laboratories is diverse and requires proper handling for proper management and treatment.

TMA will be responsible for collecting and managing:

    • Recoverable plastic containers: The plastics used in the CTFC laboratories include containers for reagents, chemicals, and various materials. After proper treatment, they can be recycled and reused for other purposes. TMA is responsible for collecting these plastics for subsequent recycling.
    • Soiled glass containers from special waste: Contaminated glass (jars, bottles, and other containers) with special waste, which requires differentiated treatment for safe handling.
    • Recoverable metal containers: Similar to plastics, these metals can also be recycled and recovered once properly managed.
    • Non-halogenated solvents: Chemical waste from non-halogenated solvents, which require specialized treatment to avoid impacts on health and the environment.
    • Neutral non-halogenated organic solutions: Organic solutions generated in laboratory processes that do not contain halogens, but still require safe management to prevent the waste from being hazardous to health or the environment.
    • Acidic inorganic solutions without heavy metals: Acidic inorganic chemical solutions without heavy metals, which also require specific and rigorous treatment to avoid any risk of contamination or environmental damage.

 

TMA will be responsible for sorting, transporting, and treating the waste in accordance with current legislation.
