This week, water is once again at the centre of the conversation. World Water Week invites us to reflect on how we use, protect and manage one of the most important resources for our lives.

When we think about protecting water, we usually think about using less, avoiding waste or making more responsible use of it. But there is another important issue that can sometimes go unnoticed: what we do with the waste we generate.

Oil, chemicals, plastics or industrial waste that are improperly managed can end up contaminating soil, rivers or groundwater. And when it comes to the marine environment, the problem can go even further.

That is why, during World Water Week, we want to highlight a connection that deserves more attention: proper waste management is also a way of protecting water.

FROM WASTE TO RESOURCE

Proper waste management is not simply about collecting waste and taking it to a treatment facility.

There is an entire process behind it, starting with the correct identification and separation of waste, followed by its collection, transport and treatment and, whenever possible, the recovery of materials that can still be put to good use.

This approach helps prevent potentially polluting waste from reaching the natural environment while also allowing us to make use of resources that would otherwise be lost.

This is where the circular economy plays an important role: the more we are able to recover and reuse materials, the less we need to extract new resources from nature.

WHAT DOES WASTE HAVE TO DO WITH WATER?

Much more than it may seem.

Poor waste management can lead to spills or leachate reaching soil and groundwater. In the case of hazardous waste, even greater control is required to prevent substances such as oils, solvents, paints or certain chemicals from entering the environment.

And it is not only hazardous waste that matters. Plastics and other materials that reach rivers and seas also have an impact on aquatic ecosystems and biodiversity.

That is why preventing waste from reaching the natural environment is also a way of protecting water.

IN THE PORT OF BARCELONA, EVERY WASTE STREAM MATTERS

This connection is particularly clear in a port environment.

At the Port of Barcelona, TMA manages waste generated by ships and cruise vessels under the MARPOL framework, including oily residues, sewage, solid waste and waste generated by ships’ exhaust gas cleaning systems.

Each type of waste requires specific management. Proper collection, transport and treatment help reduce the risk of pollution and, where the characteristics of the waste allow it, recover and valorise materials.

It is work that often takes place out of sight, but it is an essential part of day-to-day port operations and the protection of the marine environment.

Protecting water does not depend on a single action.

Reducing the amount of waste generated, separating it correctly, preventing spills, properly managing hazardous waste and promoting the recovery of materials are all decisions that, together, help reduce environmental impact.
