That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s important to understand the waste hierarchy (or the 3 Rs rule) and the <strong>different waste recovery processes<\/strong>. In this article, we explain what they consist of.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Waste recovery<\/strong> is the process by which a specific treatment is applied to the waste generated by various activities, converting it into new, useful resources or energy. This results <strong>in economic, social, and environmental benefits,<\/strong> since, instead of disposing of waste in landfills or incineration, it can be reused as new opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_WAYS_TO_RECOVER_WASTE\"><\/span><strong>4 WAYS TO RECOVER WASTE<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are different ways to recover waste, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Recycling:<\/strong> This involves collecting, sorting, and processing waste to obtain new materials or products. For example, through the recycling of recoverable materials: paper, plastic, glass, or metal. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Composting:<\/strong> The controlled decomposition of organic materials, such as food scraps or plant residues, to obtain compost, a natural fertilizer that improves soil quality.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Energy production:<\/strong> Biogas is a renewable energy source obtained from biomass (the most commonly used material being wood). Through a process called anaerobic digestion (the degradation of organic matter in the absence of oxygen in a digester), the waste is decomposed, and this organic matter is transformed into bioenergy\u2014electricity, heat, biomethane, and biofuels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Energy recovery:<\/strong> The process by which Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) is obtained, prepared from non-hazardous waste in incineration and co-incineration plants (industrial furnaces, thermal power plants, cogeneration plants, etc.). SRF serves as an alternative to fossil fuels such as fuel oil or gas and is primarily used in cement plants.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8541 lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/tma.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/3-2-1024x692.png\" alt=\"residuos valorizables \" width=\"752\" height=\"508\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/tma.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/3-2-1024x692.png 1024w, https:\/\/tma.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/3-2-300x203.png 300w, https:\/\/tma.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/3-2-768x519.png 768w, https:\/\/tma.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/3-2-700x473.png 700w, https:\/\/tma.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/3-2.png 1300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 752px) 100vw, 752px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 752px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 752\/508;\" \/><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"WASTE_HIERARCHY_AND_PROMOTION_OF_THE_CIRCULAR_ECONOMY\"><\/span><strong>WASTE HIERARCHY AND PROMOTION OF THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applying <strong>the three Rs rule: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle,<\/strong> we see that waste reduction always takes priority, followed by reuse, and then recycling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the waste hierarchy, and as outlined in the <strong>Circular Economy<\/strong> Package approved by the European Commission, recycling should be a priority, complemented by the conversion into heat or energy of waste that, given its characteristics, cannot be reused or recycled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, waste recovery helps reduce the amount of waste ending up in controlled landfills, thus <strong>reducing negative impacts on the environment and protecting the environment.<\/strong> Furthermore, it allows us to harness resources that would otherwise be wasted, <strong>save CO2 emissions<\/strong>, and reduce dependence on virgin raw materials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important to encourage <strong>waste recovery practices<\/strong> at the individual and collective levels, promoting proper waste separation at source and supporting <strong>recycling<\/strong> and composting initiatives.
