Although it is a largely invisible process, its impact is direct on operational efficiency, environmental protection, and the continuity of the public water service.<\/p>\n<p>In this context, <strong>TMA has been awarded the contract for the collection, transport, and management of pretreatment waste from the Vilafranca del Pened\u00e8s WWTP<\/strong> (managed by the Pened\u00e8s Garraf Association of Municipalities), assuming the responsibility of <strong>ensuring safe, traceable operations that comply with current regulations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the case of Vilafranca, this management takes on strategic importance due to the complexity of the sanitation network, the industrial and urban activity in the area, and the need to guarantee an efficient response to flow variations or rainfall events.<\/p>\n<p>In this context, TMA provides the <strong>service of collecting, transporting, and managing the waste generated in the pretreatment stage<\/strong> (screening and grit removal), guaranteeing safe, traceable operations in compliance with current regulations.<\/p>\n<p>This is a technical and specialized task that combines logistics, environmental control, and the first phase of the wastewater treatment process. Its function is to remove the largest solids and mineral particles present in the water before it continues to the biological and advanced treatment stages.<\/p>\n<p>When wastewater arrives at the WWTP, it carries a heterogeneous mixture of materials transported through the sewer system. These range from sand and gravel to fibers, plastics, organic matter, and other inappropriate elements that should never have entered the system.<\/p>\n<p>Pretreatment is the phase responsible for separating these materials through two main operations: <strong>screening and grit removal.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Screening consists of retaining coarse solids using screens or sieves. It is a continuous operation that acts as an initial filter and prevents bulky or fibrous objects from damaging pumps, valves, or downstream equipment.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Grit removal, on the other hand, separates sand, gravel, and mineral particles that, if not removed, would cause abrasion on mechanical equipment and unwanted accumulations in channels and tanks.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Both processes generate waste that must be removed periodically to ensure uninterrupted service. Although it is a largely invisible process, it has a direct impact on the plant&#8217;s efficiency and the quality of water treatment at the Vilafranca WWTP.<\/p>\n<p>At the Vilafranca del Pened\u00e8s WWTP, this process is especially relevant due to the characteristics of the sanitation network and the flow variations that occur throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>Pretreatment acts as <strong>the first line of defense for the treatment plant.<\/strong> In this phase, coarse solids, sand, and other materials that arrive with the wastewater and that could damage equipment or interfere with the biological processes are removed. Thanks to this, the water can continue to the subsequent stages under much more controlled conditions within the Vilafranca WWTP system.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, proper management of the wastewater treatment plant&#8217;s wastewater generated during this phase is key to maintaining the system&#8217;s stability. When the screens, channels, and grit chambers function correctly, the pumps operate within their parameters, the water flow is more uniform, and the overall treatment is more efficient. This translates into better energy efficiency, fewer breakdowns, and greater equipment durability.<\/p>\n<p>Pretreatment is also essential in critical situations. After treatment, the<strong> water is typically discharged into rivers, the sea, or aquifers,<\/strong> contributing to the natural balance of the environment. In some cases, it can also be reused for agricultural irrigation, green spaces, or urban cleaning.
